When a job runs for more than a week or two, the question comes up on every project: book a block of hotel rooms, or take a whole furnished house near site? Both work. The right answer depends on the size of the team, the length of the job and how the crew lives day to day.
When a hotel makes sense
- Stays of one to three nights
- One or two people travelling light
- City centre jobs where parking is not needed
- Short notice, when nothing else is free
When a serviced house wins
For crews of three or more staying a week or longer, a whole house usually comes out ahead:
- Cost: one weekly or monthly rate for the whole home, instead of a nightly rate per room. Longer stays get better rates.
- A room each: proper rest after long shifts, without sharing a hotel twin.
- Kitchen: the team can cook, which cuts daily allowances and suits early starts.
- Laundry and drying space: workwear and boots washed and dry by morning.
- Parking: driveways and off street parking for vans and trailers, often free.
- One invoice: a single bill for the whole stay, with your PO number on it.
What to check before you book
- How many bedrooms, and can everyone have their own room?
- How many vehicles fit, and are vans allowed?
- How far is the drive to site at shift change times?
- How often is the house cleaned and the linen changed?
- What happens if the job runs over or finishes early?
- Can you pay by invoice on account?
The quick rule of thumb
Three or more people for a week or longer? Price a house. One or two people for a couple of nights? A hotel is fine.
